Corporate Matching Gifts
Many corporations and businesses will match an employee’s donation to a non-profit. thus doubling the impact of your gift. Please check with your employer’s human resources or accounting department.
Gifts of Securities
Many people choose to make a charitable gift by transferring appreciated securities (stocks, mutual fund shares) rather than making a direct contribution of cash. The advantages are numerous.
- A gift of appreciated shares of stock allows you to maximize your gift to the Adventure by unlocking the full value of the shares as your gift.
- Gifting appreciated shares may permit you to claim a larger deduction than if you sold the shares, paid capital gains taxes and gave Adventure the net proceeds.
- It’s easy to do – Simply contact your financial advisor, make your request in writing as per their instructions, and provide Schooner Adventure’s electronic transfer information. Your advisor will wire the shares directly to Schooner Adventure’s account.
Tax-Free IRA Contributions
Using an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to make a gift to Schooner Adventure is a simple and tax efficient way to give for many older donors who are age 70 ½ or older. Learn more here.
- Gifts made under the “Qualified Charitable Distribution” (QCD) rules can allow you to save on taxes normally paid when taking your required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA.
- QCD gifts must be transferred directly from your IRA custodian and are limited to a maximum of $ 100,000 per year. Contact your financial advisor for more details.
Give Over Time
Pledges
Many of Schooner Adventure’s donors choose to pledge a monthly or yearly sustaining gift which aids the organization’s ability to plan for educational programming and ongoing preservation and operational needs throughout any given year or time period. This can also be beneficial to the donor’s financial planning as well.
Bequests
Where there’s a will there’s a way. The Adventure is pleased and honored to receive a bequest from the estate of a passionate supporter of our mission. Making a bequest is as simple as adding the Adventure to your will or designating the organization as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, an annuity or a retirement account.
- A gift of this type may also be excluded from the value of your estate for tax purposes.
- Real estate, artwork and other personal property may also be given to Adventure on a case by case reviewed basis. Please contact us to discuss a gift of this type.
Donor Advised Funds
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a good way to set aside funds for long-term giving while realizing tax benefits in the year you make the contribution As the grantor, you can set the agenda for future donations from the fund and ensure that the Adventure receives a regular stream of contributions over many years.
- DAFs can be an excellent way to offset large gains from other activities, such as the sale of a business.
- Funds can remain fully invested and continue to grow, further enhancing the value of your gift.
Charitable Lead Trusts
Charitable Lead Trusts (CLTs) are a means of providing a regular annual donation to the Adventure while allowing you to ensure that the original principal benefits your heirs.
- Annual charitable contributions from the trust may be as a fixed amount or as a percentage of the trust’s assets on an annual basis.
- Funds can remain invested and grow to provide further value both to the Adventure and your heirs while avoiding estate taxes on the growth of the assets.
- A portion of your contribution may be tax-deductible in the year of the trust’s funding based on the potential value of the charitable gift.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
A Charitable Remainder Trust allows you to retain an income from your assets while ensuring that the Adventure benefits from the remaining principal at your death.
- Annual income benefits to you from the trust may be as a fixed amount or as a percentage of the trust’s assets on an annual basis.
- Investments in the trust can continue to grow, potentially providing you with an increasing income, a greater benefit to the Adventure or both.
- A portion of your contribution may be tax-deductible in the year of the trust’s funding based on the potential value of the charitable gift.
