Garrett, Catherine Power was my great grandmother (3). I’m sure we are related somehow!
I am the granddaughter of William (Bill) Nolan who was washed to sea in 1939. Is there anyone with further information about him?
I was a volunteer on Adventure for a few years. I met the most wonderful people and enjoyed it all. I have never met such a group of dedicated people that all had a love for this schooner and a vision for her future. It makes me so happy to see that all the hard work that so many put into this beautiful vessel was not in vain. I hope to sail on her this summer. It has been a dream from the first day I saw her at Harbor Loop.
I am so proud to see how far she has come. A legacy for future generations. I can only imagine the faces of those that saw her sail for the first time. Especially Marty Krugman. Must have been something. Congratulations to all!!
Attended the Gala event last evening and it was a lot more fun than I expected. Congratulations to all those that worked so hard over the past decades to make the Adventure’s place in Gloucester history a reality. I look forward to joining the volunteer corp to continue the work.
Hello to the keepers of this important vessel,
I have been lucky to grow up near Camden, Maine. As a child I spent a lot of time on the water in Penobscot bay and frequently saw the Adventure plying the waters there.
My Grandfather Steven Powers was a native of Newfoundland. He moved to Boston area in the 1930’s, after selling his share of the schooner the “Radio”, which he helped his brothers build in Saint Johns NFLD. He raised his family in Everett. Steven Powers sailed as a crew member on the Adventure later in it’s career, when it was diesel powered. He finished his career in the middle 1960’s as a Boston Harbor pilot.
Steven’s cousin, William Nolan was one of the men who was lost from the Adventure. He was washed overboard in a violent storm, in March of 1939. In the early 1980’s, my grandfather Steven and I saw the Adventure together. We were in Penobscot Bay, riding on a Maine state ferry in Penobscott Bay. He broke down and cried. William Nolan’s name is on the Wall in Saint Anne’s Church.
The Adventure has been a wonderful monument to the risks and hard work that fishermen in all eras have endured. It is a great thing the schooner has been preserved.
I met my husband Terry on the Adventure captained by Jim Sharp in 1985. My husband passed away in 2014. He would be very happy to see you sailing again! Someday I’ll get to Gloucester or Boston to sail with you. Best wishes.
I’d like to say hello to Peter Souza from one of the schooner trash from Chicago – who also enjoyed singing with him some years ago at the weekly get-together in Gloucester. There must have been a million people who said it could never be done – but you did it Peter – what a vision and what persistence! Congratulations to you. I hope that I might see you in Gloucester while here to visit my brother and take a last sail of the season on his 1924 Wianno Sr. TWILA
My Mother had an obsession for everything regarding the Adventure. It was probably because her Father, Peter Thomas was Jeffrey’s brother. She mentioned on several occasions how she enjoyed running through the streets of Gloucester when visiting her Uncle in the mid/late twenties. In the twilight of her years, she would always make sure we would drive by the Adventure when in the area.
